my happy place…

A little fabric, some thread, 70’s music playing in the background, sweet Emmie at my feet, and my favorite BERNINA 880 makes for a very happy place!

Welcome to my day in the BERNINA Ambassador Blog Tour! A huge thanks to fellow Ambassador, Teri Lucas for organizing this hop.

My beautiful, and oh so talented mother, introduced me to sewing at age 4, and even though I’ve enjoyed a few arts and crafts over the years, quilting has been the most fun and relaxing of all. At age six I inherited mom’s “brown” sewing machine and eventually her “good” scissors, and always asked for “fabric” treats when my parents went out, so you can just imagine how exiting it was to become a fabric designer with Benartex fabrics and a BERNINA Ambassador!I took my first quilting class summer of 2004 and wanted to learn to applique, but my sewing machine didn’t feature the right stitches suggested for the technique, so I needed a new sewing machine! I bought one that didn’t work as hoped, so on my way back from returning it, spotted the BERNINA dealer and you can just imagine what happened next… I brought home a sweet Activa 220… well, today I am so blessed to sew with the awesome B880… …and my assistant approves!

Yes, it has the perfect stitch for applique, many beautiful stitch options, stadium lighting, a huge throat space that makes quilting a pleasure, plus many more incredible features!

Fast forward a few years, and now I get to spend my days designing fabric, quilt patterns, embroidery collections, traveling to teach my favorite quilting techniques, and sharing my love of quilting with my wonderful students.

So glad you stopped by today!

The Free-Motion Quilting Idea Book Blog Tour

I’m so excited to tell you about a fabulous book, The Free-Motion Quilting Idea Book, written by my friend Amanda, an accomplished quilter and spokesperson for the Bernina longarm.

If you’ve ever finished a quilt top and wondered how to quilt it, this book gives you 155 Mix & Match Designs, broken down by allover designs, blocks, sashing, borders, and individual motifs, beautifully illustrated with step by step samples of how to quilt 30 traditional blocks.

The book is filled with quilting tips

plus a fun table runner with several quilting versions to get you started.FMQIdeaBook_08_compact

And to top it off, there’s an index of designs by block

and by design family, making it super easy to mix and match designs.FMQIdeaBook_07b_compactLove, love the spiral binding!

The free-motion ideas can be easily quilted on both a domestic machine or a longarm, and for great practice and inspiration, you can download the companion Free-Motion Quilting Idea Sampler epattern made with the blocks in the book.

I joined the The Free-Motion Quilting Idea Book, Sampler, and App Facebook group and have started making the sampler using my Soul Blossoms fabric.FMQ Cherry-Soul Blossoms

I am a bit behind, but have cut everything and sewn my first row blocks……so, so easy to make!

And guess what, you can win a copy of Amanda’s great book! Leave a comment and tell me what inspires you to quilt. I’ll chose a winner at midnight this Monday, 11/16

See you in September Blog Hop
A huge thanks to Shari of Living With Purpose
and to Mdm Samm of Sew We Quilt for hosting another incredible hop.

This summer has just flown by,
and I’ve had so much fun working
on a few projects to show ya’ll.
Of course, when I signed up for this hop
I came up with so many projects,
it would’ve taken until See you in September 2015…
perhaps 2016 to have them finished, lol!
so here’s what I was able to make for 2014:

First, I want to show you my gingham project…
I thought about many thinks to make
with the layer cakes and jelly roll I purchased,
but then, I spotted my American Doll bed just sitting there,
patiently waiting for a cute quilt,
so I decided it was the perfect opportunity
to get going on a mini for it, and boy was it fun!

I drew the little dresses,

cut them out with my Silhouette Cameo,
and then embroidered them on my new Bernina…
which I love, love, love…
The little dresses are so tiny,
I was able to hoop 8 of them in one large hoop!
Then it was a matter of adding a little sashing,
a few borders, some quilting and binding,
and I had a cute little mini!
The little bed comes with a mattress and pillow,
so I made a quick little pillow sham to match the quilt,
now I just need a to get one of those cute dolls, don’t you think?
Project number two was for my hubby’s office,
sorry about the poor photo quality…
all the taupe triangles have koi quilted on them…
Hubby loved how it turned out!

The third project was part of a challenge with my Monday guild.
We were to create a cow inspired by the book “Out of the Box”
by Mary Lou Weidman & Melanie Bautista McFarland.
I was a personal trainer for many years,
so decided to make a “fitness” cow…
goodness, I had so many things I wanted to add,
but ran out of time… I still had so much fun with this one,
especially coming up with her list of exercises…
Would love to make a few more quilts
with Mary Lou’s techniques.

My Lagniappe project
was this super fast Twister quilt
I used Quilter’s Dream Request cotton batting,
a very thin bat perfect for a summer quilt.

So… I loved playing with my gingham
and want to share the fabric I didn’t use…
I’d like to give away these two RB Layer Cakes to one of ya’ll…
to enter, leave me a comment and tell me:
what makes a quilt “modern” to you?
A winner will be chosen on Sunday, September 14.
