Creative Spaces… Week 5, Day 1

I can’t believe it’s Week 5 already!

This week we share storage tips for thread, buttons and embellishments…

…all the yummy and oh so hard to resist items we bring home, but boy can it get messy and, easily lost! Let me share how I try to keep it under control.

These thread racks are a fantastic way to add color to your sewing space while keeping everyday threads easily accessible, plus, you know at a glance if you are running low on anything. I painted the racks white and hung them on the wall next to my sewing machine; the one on the left holds my piecing, applique, and a few specialty threads, the rack on the right holds all my Aurifil 12wt threads.

The majority of the thread I use for longarm quilting comes in large spools that require a bit more space. I found the plastic boxes at a big-box store and they fit nicely on the metal shelves. The threads are grouped by color, plus a few drawers for variegated, neon, and specialty threads. A couple of drawers hold longarm quilting templates, and of course, there’s the catch-all drawer that’s always a bit messy!

Remember the little cabinet on wheels that stores my Crossover II? These drawers hold most of my hand work threads and for the most part are grouped by type… the top drawer catches the rest of all the yummy finds!

I love machine embroidery and have been collecting these threads for a very long time, but I’m running out of bins! This shelf sits under my table and it is also on wheels. These plastic bins are made to hold mid size spools and are grouped by color.

Embellishments! Yikes, this stuff can get crazy, especially the ric-rac! This shelf holds photo boxes I’ve collected over the years and are a perfect way to “hide” the madness, haha! The old flower vases are a fun way to store bag-hardware and other little odd items.

The photo boxes are labeled and filled with ribbon, zippers, velcro, ric-rac trim, elastic, Yo-Yos, etc. The photo boxes come with dividers and are great for separating things.

Buttons! Love my buttons! They can add so much detail to a project and well, they’re just fun objects!! This old CD shelf… remember those? got a few coats of white paint and is the perfect width to hold a variety of glass jars.

Just love all the color! The IKEA jars hold a rainbow of buttons… I need a few more, just wish we had an IKEA in Louisiana! And these little jelly mason jars store hand dyed buttons.

How do you store your buttons, thread and embellishments?

And then, there is batting… oh goodness, let’s not go there just yet!

And talking about batting, have you tried Bosal’s products yet? If not, you may want to enter this giveaway.

I like your ribbon boxes and botton jars. Old spools to hold rickrack – would work for quilt bindings.

I’ve never tried Bosal products but I’d love to try them. I like your button jars, all separated into colors.

My organization is mostly put in bags I’ve made with a vinyl window so I can see what’s in there but stack them up. Your ideas are something for mee to aspire to do.

I would love some ideas on storing batting. Mine goes into a basket and doesn’t look very nice. The jars on the CD rack is a super idea. Thanks for sharing your quilting studio and tips.

Your storage solutions for your thread and buttons are quite an eye catcher, the colors are beautiful. I don’t have a lot of thread so it is sorted by type and color, then it is stored in see through containers from the container store. Their containers come in a couple different sizes and stack nicely. My other notions are somewhat sorted and stored in labeled containers. I have never tried Bosal. Thank you for the giveaway opportunity.

I love the way you’ve sorted your various buttons and threads. Everything looks so pretty, yet so easy to reach. This blog hop has been lots of fun and has lots of great ideas. Thanks for your efforts.

Wow on the embellishments!!! I am not surprised, though I did not know, that the Katahdin Batting was made in Maine.

Love the storage of your buttons. I have an antique gum ball machine for old button storage. Fun to take items and repurpose them for our sewing rooms.

I have some of my thread in a thread storage box and some on a rack. I don’t have many buttons so they are in one mason jar. Other odds and ends such as hardware are in boxes I got from IKEA I am looking for different thread storage. Apparently I am a terrible housekeeper and my thread gets dusty on the racks.

I have my buttons in small jars like you do. I love to see all of the colours on display! My CD rack is being used to store fat quarters. The photo boxes are a great idea for notions.
