Doll Days! Blog Tour

I’m so excited to tell you about my friend Erin Hentzel‘s wonderful new book, Doll Days!

It’s a fabulous book about vintage inspired doll clothes with a modern flair. The book is filled with gorgeous photographs, easy to follow instructions, and loads of inspiration for making beautiful outfits for 18″ dolls, plus suggestions for modifying or adding embellishments.

I started sewing doll clothes at the age of four and felt like a kid again making a dress for my American Doll. I used a favorite print from my Sunday Ride fabric collection with Benartex, added a little touch of aqua, and trimmed it with little flowers.

I really enjoyed making this quick project and can’t wait to make the little shorts, shirts, and the cutest sun dress in the book!

How about you, have you ever sewn doll clothes? Would you like to make some of Erin’s cute dresses? C&T is giving away a copy of Doll Days! (eBook for international winners) And how about sewing the little outfits with some of my fabric?

To enter the giveaway, leave a comment about your favorite childhood doll or toy. Giveaway closes this Sunday, July 3rd, at midnight.

Dolls have always been my favorite toy, and the attraction was definitely the beautiful clothing. Even now in my 60’s I still have many dolls including my childhood Betsy McCalls, and my 1959 Barbie. The original Barbie clothes were exqusite and I learn to knit by making more clothes for her. A few years later I learned to sew for the same reason.

When I was young, all of the dolls available to me, were made of “composition, and all seemed to look the same. Mine was dressed in pink and my sister’s doll wore blue. Until I learned to use the sewing machine, I really enjoyed cutting out paper dolls and making clothes for them – netting, felt . fabric and ribbons for formals and tutus, and cotton for evening capes, etc. Many hours of fun…

While I loved my dolls, books were always my favorite thing. I know you don’t actually play with them, but they and my horse were what I spent my most time with.
But now, I spend more time with my dolls and my cats. I’d love to win a copy of this book, my girls always want new clothes, rather like my 18 year old daughter!
And I love the dress you made. That bike fabric is adorable! Thanks!

My favorite toy growing up were toy horses and a stable to go with them. It fit in the bottom of my closet. My girls now play with their dolls all the time and we sew several items for their dolls. They are learning the love of fabric and a young age.

Unlike other children I knew, I was always fascinated by making doll clothes as a small child, rather than playing with the dolls themselves. Bringing together the perfect fabric with just the right pattern, then adding the joy of sewing itself — well that is nirvana to me. Plus, I loved earning money. So, at eight years old, I started a door-to-door business selling doll clothes. I bought fabric remnants or recycled fabric from my family’s old clothes into fancy doll clothes based on commercial doll clothes patterns. People quickly loved the idea and often commissioned special orders. I recycled all of my profits back into my business and soon was able to afford bigger and more expensive fabric pieces. And voila! I became a seamstress making garments for people without even realizing the transition. Many decades later, I still love sewing doll clothes, but now I donate what I make to local children in need. Dolls and doll clothes bring immediate smiles to the faces I encounter and make me very grateful that God gave me a love of sewing at a very young age. In this regard, I hope I never grow up.

Would love to get this book. I’m teaching my granddaughter to sew and this would be the perfect thing so we can sew doll clothes for her and her sisters dolls. Thanks Cherry

I fondly recall playing with a Revlon doll and now I love to collect dolls. One is an 18″ doll who needs clothes and I hope I can make them as adorable as you have.

  8. Karen says:

First off, your dress is so beautiful! I love the fabric you chose. It’s awesome!!
Second, my favorite childhood doll was my Thumbelina. I played with her long after all my friends had stopped playing with dolls. She was well loved.

I played with barbie dolls, when barbies were a new idea! but one of the funnest memories I have is taking clothes pins and pipe cleaners and making my own doll. all the neighbor girls would get together and do this. at times we would also play with paper dolls. lots of good memories!

  10. Kathy says:

I have good memories of making paper dolls and designing the clothes for them with colored pencils. I would keep a shoe box full of my new people and go outside and sit under a tree and make more. I wish I kept that box although I do still have my original bubble cut Barbie that my grandma sewed clothes with me for it. Now I make doll clothes for charity and enjoy any new patterns.

  11. Cheri Murphy says:

My Barbies had clothing made from wrapping paper and tape until my mum allowed me to have needles, scissors, fabric and thread! I always loved fashion dolls better than baby dolls.

  12. Angela F says:

Have made tons of doll clothes, mostly for my nieces because my aunts and grandmother made sewn, crocheted and knitted clothing for me. I had a Francie doll, my sister and I played for hours and hours constructing houses and furniture out of books, washcloths,
handkerchiefs and empty thread spools. Wonderful memories and we both still have them.

  13. Kathy h says:

Such a cute dress. The fabric is perfect for it too. I loved playing with my Barbie doll. Tried to make some clothes but wasn’t that great on sewing back then.

  14. Rosalind Gutierrez says:

As a kid I had fun with a drink wet baby doll. I made Barbie clothes in the past but making them for my granddaughter’s American Girl doll would be so much more fun especially with the bike theme fabric.

  15. Paige says:

I had 2 favorite dolls named Velvet and Mia. My daughter plays with her doll every day. I would love to have this book.

  16. Tari says:

My 2 favorite dolls were my Chatty Cathy and my Thumbelina. My mom used to sew for them using scraps from things she made for me. I watched my mom sew so that when I was 7 I was pretty sure I could at least learn hand sewing.

  17. Duana G says:

I don’t remember the doll’s name. She was made of rubber and was wearing a red dress and sitting in a jump chair. I thought that was special. This tour has been great and I have loved all the reviews.

  18. Mary says:

The book looks awesome. I still love sewing doll clothes for the granddaughters. Like you, I started sewing doll wardrobes when I was just small and enjoyed it soooo much. I have one of my very first dolls. When I was ten I wanted a bride doll for Christmas. My mom took that doll to a doll shop and they made it into a bride doll for me. It is still dressed in a dotted Swiss bridal dress.

  19. Ellie Aud says:

My favorite childhood toy was my Cabbage Patch doll, Beatrice. I still have her and my girls love playing with her along with their other dolls. Thanks for the chance to win a copy of this book!

  20. Carmen N says:

I had several toys I liked but my favorite was a stuffed dog. Years later, a real dog got hold of it and turned it into stuffing all over the living room floor 😛

  21. Mary says:

Chatty Cathy, Thumbelina, Baby First Step, beautiful generic infant doll named Karen, Barbie, — oh the list goes on. I loved my dolls!
