My Retro Chair…

Welcome to my day in the
I’m so happy to be sharing my block with ya’ll today!
I don’t know what it is about chairs,
but I just love them!
…I’ve made a few
quilts that feature chairs!…
so, when I was invited to submit
a block to Quiltmaker’s 100 Blocks,
I new it would be a chair!
I usually draw on my computer,
but sometimes it’s just easier to sketch it out
and scan the image in.
This is the little sketch I started with…

…a half chair!

It’s easier to mirror the
half to create a symmetrical drawing.
Of course, I had to make a quilt using my block, lol!
sorry about the bad picture…

It’s part of the this issue’s Designer’s Gallery!

You know how much I LOVE quilting
and designed the quilt with large open areas

Isn’t this flower just perfect?

Here’s a close up of the chair block…
Check out the clock…
just had to add a little bit of bling! he he!

Would you like to make my chair?
I think it would make a fun little pillow or perhaps a bag, or a…

I just cannot wait to get my hands on a copy of Volume 7! I get so many wonderful ideas for projects from the 100 Blocks issues!!

  2. Lisa Marie says:

Your block is great and the fabric choices are perfect! I haven't done any chairs in my quilting (although maybe I need to!). I have done a fair number of flowers and birds.

  3. Marca says:

There is a chair upholstered with a quilt at my lqs, but I haven't ever quilted a chair. I've been doing baskets and hexies lately.

  4. Sandi1100 says:

I never thought about making a chair quilt but your quilt is gorgeous! I love how you quilted it! The Blog hops are so much fun as I get to see so many different designers. Thanks for a chance to win. Quiltmaker is my favorite magazine.

  5. Michele says:

WOw. Very creative use of that fabric. Always wanted a doll house. Maybe I could have a quilt instead.
I'm working on an endless EPP hex quilt, some hex Ispy quilts, and a Candied Hexagon quilt. Hmmm. I see a theme there.

  6. Pat S. says:

Oh my goodness…your block is sew adorable! For some reason I'm liking farm scenes right now. I'll most likely be on to another craze tomorow. LOL Thanks sew much for this chance to win 😀

  7. Deb says:

Your chair block is wonderful! I am into teapots and coffee cups – a quilt with all different styles and piecing methods, applique, etc.
    Thanks for the giveaway!

  8. Koricard says:

I love your chair block. The quilting detail on it really adds to the effect and the design. I like to use flowers in my quilts. I had never thought of using chairs. Very nice!

  9. Carol Sc says:

Well, I must admit, I have never thought of using a chair in a quilt pattern — I do more scrappy piecing. …I like your block — have to think about how I might use it.

  10. Nancy D. says:

Oh my goodness what a fun block. Love the lamp and clock and quilting for the wall and floor. Sweet! I've not done a chair. Flowers are probably what I've used more of than anything.

  11. Marie Atkinson says:

Your chair is great! And the quilting is awesome! I love quilts of all kinds. I love to look at quilts with lots of detail and your block fits that bill. Lots of great detail and imagination.

  12. QuilterLaura says:

Adorable block! I would have to say my favorite would be snowflakes! However, I have found that many star blocks can be made to look like a snowflake if you make it in wintery colors!

  13. Suze says:

As soon as your blog opened, I thought I "know" her – from blog hops. I haven't participated; I just comment on everyone else's creative posts. I love the chair. For me, it brings back memories of what I thought was a large chair at my grandmother's house. I felt like a princess sitting in her special chair. I adore the bling on the clock. My eye was naturally drawn to the chair and then I spotted the clock and the lampshade. You are a creative lady and I love the quilt. Thank you for a generous giveaway, too!

  14. Sandra says:

I am not a that talented like you are. Your block includes a chair, a lamp and a clock. There is no way I could ever become a designer. I am so lucky just to do squares and rectangles. Maybe even a pinwheel. Your block is just so cute and you are so talented. This would be so cute in my great grandnewpher's bedroom or even in my quilting area. Thank you so much for the chance to win.

  15. Margaret says:

I don't know how to do a block like this. I barely sew two pieces of fabric together to form a block. I do however love seeing all the work of you very talented designers.

  16. WoolenSails says:

Love your block and I think it would make a fun wall hanging or maybe a set with different fabrics.
I think I have more cats in my quilts, than anything and sometimes they pop up in quilts that had none;)

  17. SewLindaAnn says:

Good morning Cherry! I love your chair and cannot wait to make it. Love the tip on drawing half and mirroring, I drive myself crazy sometimes trying to draw the other half of something. I am usually drawing from nature, flowers, birds and the like.

  18. patricia says:

I have done a chair quilt. (Just sharing.) I tend to fall for the primitives but I am in no way a designer. That's why I call myself a preserver of patterns. Leave that to the pros!

  19. Rebecca says:

I love the use of the quilting to extend the design of the chair and the room it is in.
i have to say dragonflies are ending up in a lot of my quilts lately

  20. Lori says:

your chair is wonderful. I love how antique it looks. I really love your FMQ. I just started yesterday with some simple loops.

  21. Anonymous says:

I am in awe of your quilting – I can piece but not able to quilt like that as of yet. I am working on improving my skills. I love the way the quilting really makes the wainscoting in your block – adds depth. thanks Cindy W. at cwienstroer@amuniversal.com

  22. Thim3 says:

Beautiful block. I do alot of scrappy pieced quilts so when I see blocks like this I really admire the quilters that do them…One day I will try my hand at a block like this. Thank you for your chance to win.
    thim3@hotmail.com

  23. Robin T says:

What a great chair and clock. I love your fabric choices and the quilting is exquisite! I need to brush up on my FMQ. I'm a little rusty. Thank you for the great block!

  24. Kim says:

I love the fourth block with the chair, lamp and clock. The quilted half wall is awesome. Usually, I prefer paper piecing, but this block could make me take up applique, a technique I have avoided as it involves fussy work with a hot iron.

  25. Laura says:

Love your chair!! Your quilting and the clock are also fabulous. When I get a chance, I like to include a cat in my quilts (but most of mine don't have a place for one…). I think I will start adding one on my backing s-maybe as part of the label? You just gave me a great idea!! Thank you!!

  26. Cloud 9 says:

Great block! You did a beautiful job with the quilting. I would love to incorporate flowers into my quilting but I'm not good enough yet with freemotion. Someday when I retire I'll have more time to practice.

  27. Diana says:

I love this block! I have been appliqueing a lot of flowers lately. I think it is because I wanted spring to be here so bad! Thanks for the chance to win!

  28. Kathy H says:

Wonderful chair. ANd your quilting is just beautiful. I like to have stars in my quilts but that chair is just so cute, I will need to make a pillow to put on my favorite chair! Chair pillow for the chair. That will make me laugh!

  29. Susan says:

I am a beginner quilter but I fell in love with dresdens & fans. My mom passed-down to me a whole box of delicate "blades" to work with.

  30. Needled Mom says:

Congratulations!! Your block is just darling and you did such a nice job on it.

I always like shadow quilting, but I doubt there is a quilting type that I do not find beautiful.

  31. Darlene B says:

I love stars in quilt designs – so many variations! Your chair block is adorable – probably one of the most unique blocks I've seen….and I love the bling!

  32. Anonymous says:

I haven't tried this kind of detail yet – but I'm intrigued enough to consider making a bag with this design (my Mom would LOVE it!!) I'm pretty new to quilting, so I haven't got a favourite yet, but I like symmetry (stars, chevrons, cross-hatching..)

  33. Kristen says:

That's so cute! I definitely want to make that block next time I need to feature a focus fabric. My favorite design in quilting is probably anything to do with shoes – in the pattern, the fabric or the quilting! Thanks for the chance to win!

  34. Cathy B says:

I am a traditional quilt most of the time and venture outside my comfort zone occasionally. 😉 Congratulations on having a block in this volume. I really love it!! Thank you!

  35. Joanna says:

I'm amazed that you made a quilt block that pictures a chair. It has so much charm. I'm not sure I have a favorite design for quilts, but I do love house blocks as well as star block.

  36. Michelle says:

I don't know if I have a favorite quilting design, but that chair of yours is definitely cute! I love the way your quilting suggests wallpaper.

  37. TheStylishHome says:

Honestly…I'm speechless. LOVE LOVE LOVE!!! I don't think I have a favorite yet…. but I could totally see your block on a bag! It just made my top 5 from what I've seen so far that I want to make…and I'm sticking around as a new follower! Thank you so much for thinking outside the block! (And the quilting? PERFECTLY RETRO!)

  38. Nancy Sue says:

I love your chair design, and find myself looking past the lamp and clock to see what else is in the block room 🙂 Awesome! My favorite designs are guitars. Having a picking husband and a strumming 5 yr old son, I'm always on the lookout and doodling 🙂 Congrats on your wonderful block!

  39. katiedidit says:

What a whimsical block! And the clock and lamp added to one of the blocks? Wonderful. And the quilting is great. I'm going to follow your blog. Thanks for the chance to win the magazine!

  40. Cecilia says:

Amazing! I love all of the little details in your block. I don't think I have a favorite design, unless it is a Dresden plate. Thanks for the chance to win a copy of the magazine.

  41. Sandra says:

Your block is so cute. Grats on being in the magazine.

My favorite design would have to be applique flowers. One of these days I will tackle a huge bouquet for my wall. I probably like the flowers because I am allergic to a lot of them in RL.

  42. Mary says:

CUTE Chair. Just one block with the clock and lamp and there's a wall quilt mini. Love the BLING. I am happy to see all of the fun blocks in this issue. Enjoying visiting NEW Blogs too. Thanks for a chance to WIN.

  44. Elizabeth says:

I really like floral patterns for actual quilting. The quilting for your block is amazing. It really makes it look like the chair is in a room. Could be fun to change the "wallpaper" patterns and chair covers for a more varied quilt. Darling block.

  45. Ruth Rocker says:

Congratulations on your block being published. It's lovely. My favorite quilting design is whatever I'm working on at the moment 😀 Very fickle, don't you think?

Thanks for a chance to win.

  46. The Village Queen says:

This has to be my favorite block so far! Love the chair, and I can have such fun picking fabrics for it! And love what to me is retro vintage fabric patterns (yes I was born a long time ago), so fun to see the youngsters loving the 50's & 60's inspired colors and patterns. Thanks for the chance!

  47. ritainalaska says:

birds of any kind is my fave theme and have collected lots of pix of them for inspiration. love your chairs, but i saw birds when i looked at your setting. thanx for the chance to win a copy of this marvelous magazine.

  48. caroldcrisp says:

Your machine quilting is outstanding! Love the whimsey of your piece. I'm not skilled enough with my free motion to accomplish some of the designs I dream up, but I'm very partial to frogs, dragonflies and bees!

  49. Barbara Pricola says:

I love stars. The open spaces on your quilt are absolutely beautiful. I could see using your block to make a throw for my living room! Thank you for the chance to win.

  50. VickiT says:

I absolutely LOVE your block. The chair is just too cute but your quilting is fabulous. I really love the way you did so many different directions separating sections of your block to make them each stand out. Just awesome.

I haven't done applique yet so I can't say what my favorite design would be but, I have a number of blocks on my list of things to do and most of them have flowers including bias stems and the leaves, not just a flower head itself.

  51. MissPat says:

I loved the quilting in your chair block. I like to do flowers and stars and butterflies in free motion quilting. Everyone thinks they are hard to do, but it's really very easy with a little practice.

  52. carla says:

Hi!!! Very cute!!! Love the clock and lamp too!!! I love flowers, cats, and birds!!!! I could put a cat on your chair!!! Hee hee Thanks for the fun!!!!

  53. JudyCinNC says:

  54. SewingJanice says:

Your block just blows me away! Love the design and the quilting. I usually pick designs with stars and/or hearts, but as my skills improve, I look forward to trying new things.

  57. dcFfLy80wJbYSTL0EVonGf_lvA-- says:

I'm currently a fan of pinwheel blocks, I have way to many patterns that involve them. I've started paper piecing a bit more lately. I also have been studying the actual quilting of pieces. I love how the quilting enhances your chair block. It makes the chair all that more cool looking. ll_gee at Hotmail

  58. Lynda says:

I love your quilting it brings a lot of life to your quilt. Right now I am very fond of cathedral windows and half square triangles

  59. Brenda J. says:

Cool block! Love the retro feel to the block and the quilting on the example. Lately I have been working with lots of flying geese. Congrats on being published and thanks for the chance to win!

  60. Laura says:

None of the designs I use can compare with the originality of your chair. I love using HSTs, but they seem kind of tame compared to your upholstery. And, I have to say, as much as I like the chair, the lampshade totally cracks me up! Congratulations on your block being included in Volume 7!

  61. AnnieK says:

Your block made me grin from ear to ear…love it! I'm a big fan of quilting daisies or dahlias … and I'm a sucker for any fabric with birds on it. 🙂

  62. Kay Ahr says:

As far as "regular" quilty items are concerned, I love star blocks. But I also like house blocks. Some of the paper-pieced ones with porches (and porch chairs) are unreal!

  63. Maureen says:

Cherry, you made me laugh! I have a penchant for chairs & have numerous in my home that are unique, don't match, but are mine! I love your block & would say my favourite quilty technique is applique. Thanks so much for a chance at the give-away!

  64. JillB says:

Your block makes me think of Grandma's house – a warm feeling.
I am not sure I have a favorite – I like the way scraps come together and create wonderful shapes and secondary shapes – I like the accuracy of paper piecing and I like the versatility of applique. I am pretty wishy-washy with quilts, I can be swayed in many directions!

  65. wendy says:

Cute! I like chairs too. I have a small collection of vintage children's chairs. I guess my favorite design in quilting would be little houses or flowers. Thanks!

  66. Back Porch Extras says:

Congrats on having your block in Vol. 7! I love your chair block. I can't say I have anything thing in particular I use unless it would be a peacock. If I find a fabric, pattern or anything with this theme of colors I am all over it!

  67. patchouli moon studio says:

  74. Cathlene says:

I really like your chair, and usually chairs aren't my thing. Just goes to show when you follow your heart, you can make others see the same thing you do. Normally, I like stars. I want to make a Space Owl quilt with lots of yellow and white stars on a dark background.

  75. Amy says:

Wow, how to choose my favorite block design! My current favorite is Burgoyne Surrounded, a two-color traditional block. However, I change rather frequently, and it's definitely difficult to just pick one. I'm sure I could mention at least ten more designs. I do LOVE your chair block and can see it with perhaps some animal print on the chair…OK, can't wait for this issue! Thanks a bunch!

  76. Ellen says:

Wow! What an amazing block. The block looks a little difficult for a newbie like me. My favorite blocks are machine embroidery designs.

  79. Judy1522 says:

Your quilt is just gorgeous I totally love the chair and your quilting gives it the look of sitting in a room – so perfect! I have not been quilting that long and have not done enough of it yet to really decide on a favorite. I have yet to do an applique quilt so at this point with what I have done so far pieced stars are my favorite.

  80. Karrie Smith says:

While chairs are awesome, that I agree, I mostly like to design (ok-doodle: sloths, octopuses and owls). Weird animals that look cute. Thanks for the chance to win a signed copy! And congrats on your block. The quilting in the table runner is marvelous!

  81. vicki says:

I love your block-it looks just like a room with all the cool quilting..it is so good! I like whatever strikes my fancy at the time-I am quilting flowers on a Jayhawk quilt for my self, and whatever looks good on another one right now. Thanks for the giveaway and congratulations on being in the magazine. vickise at gmail dot com

  82. Cathryn says:

The chair is certainly a great one. Reminds me of the chair that my grandmother had in her living room – the chair we could never sit in. I'm waiting very impatiently for Volume 7 – I have a need to get started reading it.

  83. ELIZABETH CROSS says:

I have never made anything like this design but I'm planning a gad for a friend celebrating a "Golden Year" birthday and This would be a perfect pattern. thanks for the Cool design.

  84. jrt14 says:

I like to work with star blocks and patterns. Your chair is neat and I like how you quilted the background of the block to look like a floor and wall. Thank you for a chance to win.

  85. Sharon Hughson says:

I love your chair block. I'm just starting to work fusible applique b/c I can't do needleturn. Hurts my hand too much and I'm not good at it. I've never made a chair block before, but I might try yours. I have done flowers a lot though. They are easy.

  86. Anonymous says:

No.. not chairs until now, I must have a go at your block though. The wall paper is exotic too. My favourite subject has been bird applique because I love birds. They just fly into my head while I am designing a new block and take up a pose on the nearest branch and stay put. Perhaps it has something to do with the new bird bath I installed? :)grace(at)amnet(dot)net

  87. DeAnna Julie Dodson says:

What a cute chair! And I love the quilting in the block.

I like an overall quilting design with little surprises tucked into it (like leaves with maybe a little bunny peeking out or so on).

  88. S Walker says:

I generally gravitate towards pinwheels of some sort. As a non-sketcher, your chair is beyond my ability. I really admire your quilting also. Great job. swalker287 (at)aol(dot)com

  89. kwiltnkats says:

Definitely something different in your block…I have made a highchair for a baby quilt. Your block looks to be quite the challenge. Love how you quilted it. Sandi

  90. Marcia W. says:

Thanks for the chance. Your chair block is so very different and gorgeous too! I love the colors and details of the birds and flowers. I like to make variations of 9-patches as within that grid of 9, most any block variation can be used. I'm not that great at the hand quilting motifs though, and usually follow the piecing lines. One day I may learn to FMQ using my sewing machine. Congratulations on your block being selected for QUiltmaker's 100 Blocks Volume 7.

  91. tlcala4me says:

That block is amazing! I would love to make something with it, and have no idea what it would be yet, but know I would love it! The quilting is sweet.

The quilting on your chair block is amazing. This is such a cute block that it makes me want to learn to applique so can make it!

  93. Shannon says:

I love your block. I like your idea of drawing out half of the picture then scanning it into the computer. I like brights. I'm still learning so I am still unsure of my own style.

  94. Kim says:

    Did you pick a winner?
Adorable block and so beautifully quilted, nice going :0).
I love circles and words on quilts and I am trying to get better
    at both.
